EU votes to save veggie burgers

In a win for common sense, last week the EU voted to allow plant-based foods to continue to be called ‘burgers’ and ‘sausages’ as long as these products are clearly labelled. We know that language around food is incredibly important for influencing people’s choices, terms such as ‘burger’ or ‘steak’ on plant-based items actually make it easier for consumers to know how to integrate these products into their meals. Whilst transparency and clarity are essential, there seemed little evidence to show that consumers were being misled by products such as ‘soy steak’. Missing from the conversation seems to be the more important point that the ingredients in alternative meat products must be sourced responsibly and sustainably, whilst providing good nutrition for human health and wellbeing.
