Food waste fines in China

We know that drastic action is needed to combat food waste but China has gone further than any other nation by introducing a new law that means restaurants can be fined for enabling or promoting food waste. As part of ‘Operation Empty Plate’ that was announced last year, food service operators face penalties if they induce or mislead consumers to “order excessive meals and cause obvious waste”. Fines of more than £1,000 can be issued and restaurants will also be allowed to charge customers for excessive amounts of leftovers. Whilst we doubt laws of this sort will become common place, this will hopefully raise awareness of the vast amounts of food currently going to waste in China and encourage food service and diners to do something about it.
