Chef Heston Blumenthal came under fire recently after he claimed that women are not reaching the same career heights in the industry as men because of their biological clocks and struggle to lift “heavy pots and pans” after childbirth. Whilst his comments have been defended for being taken out of context, there is an ongoing struggle within the restaurant industry to retain female talent. Chef and restaurant owner Asma Khan commented, “Heston was right – lifting heavy pans is difficult for pregnant women, but they still make the best chefs” and pointed towards the need for kitchens to change. Khan points out that most of these changes are actually very simple and that with a sensible approach, this challenge could be easily overcome.
