Having responded to 19 different disasters so far this year, and serving more than 10 million meals since its inception, World Central Kitchen is an organization that brings meals to people hit by both natural and manmade disasters, such as hurricanes and the US/Mexico border crisis. At the recent UN Climate Week, WCK announced its Climate Disaster Fund with the aim to raise $50 million toward disaster response efforts. WCK provides meals that are fresh, never pre-packaged, made with locally sourced proteins and vegetables, and when available, served with recyclable plates and cutlery. Their meals are a sharp contrast from the packaged foods often brought in by more established disaster relief organisations, and demonstrate the power of food for providing not only nourishment, but comfort, especially in times of crisis.
