Poultry to account for half of world increase in meat consumption

As KFC develops its first lab-grown chicken nuggets, the FAO and OECD have published their latest Agricultural Outlook report, with the news that global meat consumption will grow by 12% in the coming decade. The report states that lower cost poultry will make up more than half of that increase due to falling feed costs and growing consumption from middle income countries. The report recognises that health and environmental concerns in high income countries may lead to transitions away from animal based protein but there’s clearly more work to be done to change the direction of meat consumption globally. Whatever the solution, it seems innovations such as KFC’s are likely to play a larger role in affecting our consumption than they have in the previous decade.
