As countries across Europe begin easing lockdown measures, a range of new ideas are being tested, with alfresco dining and booking ahead two key measures we’re likely to see more of. In Italy, Burger King is testing an app that will allow customers to order and pay for their food, and in a change from traditional fast-food models, is asking customers who wish to dine in to book a table in advance. At city level, Vilnius in Lithuania is temporarily giving outdoor public spaces to its restaurants and barsto help them comply with social distancing rules, whilst a similar campaign has just launched in the UK. Some of these measures will work better than others and only time will tell exactly how we’ll be eating out over the coming months, but we would certainly take a pre-booked, alfresco lunch right now, especially if it means helping bars and restaurants to re-open.
