We’ve seen government aid tied to climate requirements and now a Californian programme is doing something similar with restaurants and fair treatment of staff. High Road Kitchens, a not for profit is aiming to re-build a fairer restaurant industry. The programme offers restaurants grants when they commit to providing daily meals through a pay-what-you-can model, whilst also committing to paying staff a living wage and increasing equitable hiring. Funded by the California Government, not only are the grants designed to help restaurants survive the current crisis but are being used to change the way workers are treated. Combining immediate financial assistance with longer-term positive change is a great example of not only helping the industry to survive, but embedding better practices, allowing it to thrive in the future.
