Tech giants including Google, Facebook and Amazon will allow their employees to work from home until the end of this year, whilst Twitter has gone a step further announcing that staff can work from home forever if they wish. This has made us think about the changing role of local restaurants and cafes in our daily lives and what this might mean for larger chains. With no commute, as cafes re-open, is it more likely your daily coffee will come from a local cafe rather than a high street chain? Meanwhile in the US there is a worry that independent restaurants are far more likely to be the ones that don’t re-open whilst large businesses are better able to make use of government grants and assistance. This reminds us of the power of consumers, might we step back to consider what kinds of businesses we wish to support, and think about this when we get our daily coffee?
