When it comes to packaging, 2020 wasn’t on the whole a great year. Single-use plastic sky rocketed and recycling systems were disrupted. But could 2021 offer some more positive developments? This article explores five key trends for sustainble packaging which provide some encouraging predicitions. One we’ve mentioned before in this newsletter is the rise of reuse models, with companies such as Loop moving into the quick-service restaurant sector having a potentially huge impact. Further developments include better understanding of biodegradable and compostable packaging and the infrastructure required for each, including knowing when something isn’t actually the right solution. Along with greater producer responsibility and growing action to eliminate toxins from food packaging we hope these trends are ones that take off.
